RadioactivityCounter

This application serves as a functional radioactivity counter, requiring no additional hardware. It transforms your phone into a Geiger Müller Counter for measuring radioactivity post proper calibration.

Attention: After upgrading to a higher version of iOS, recalibration is necessary due to potential changes in camera data properties.

Disclaimer: The radiation detected by the camera may pose health risks to the user and potentially damage the device.

Important note: The camera sensor is capable of detecting gamma radiation (e.g., CS137) and some beta radiation (depending on the energy, certain beta rays may penetrate plastic parts – e.g., H3 or K14 are weak sources). It cannot detect alpha rays (e.g., PO210). Although AM241 is primarily an alpha source, it also emits gamma radiation which can be detectable in prolonged measurements. Refer to our homepages for measurement examples and tips.

We conducted calibrations using numerous devices such as iPod2*, iPhone 3GS*, iPhone 4*, iPhone 4S, iPhone5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, 6s, iPad 2, and iPad 3* at the Helmholtz Research Centre in Munich. Utilizing a CS137 test source ranging from 10 µGy/h to 1 Sv/h for each phone, we stored values in the application for initial use (devices may have slight variations). For precise professional measurements, adjusting the devices to the sensor via expert setup is recommended. Default settings should suffice for personal use (feedback is encouraged).

* = Note: Some devices may be incompatible due to updated iOS versions or lacking features (e.g., GPS precision using SIM cards) – consider utilizing an older version of the App, which should be available based on settings (1.3).
